't even on the witness list, gabrielle giffords. if you take a look at the screen, you can see a handwritten note written by her speech therapist, i am told, the 16 sentences she uttered before this committee and had everybody in the room, no matter what their position on guns, mesmerized. a dramatic entrance from a woman who was a congressional colleague until a gunman shot a bullet through her head while she was doing her job. even more dramatic, gabby giffords labored yet passion nal plea for passion. >> speaking is difficult but i need to say something important. violence is a big problem. too many children are dying. too many children. we must do something. be bold, be courageous, americans are counting on you. >> reporter: giffords is an advocate and so is her husband mark kelly. >> a strong supporter of the second amendment as anyone on this panel. my wife would not be sitting in this seat, she would not have been sitting here today if we had stronger background checks. >> reporter: at the other end of the table, the other star witness with a very different perspective.

gabrielle giffords will join wayne lapierre to testify on gun control. pa trach lay hee called the hearing in response to the newton shooting where 20 children and six adults were killed. but lapierre says he doesn't believe the shooting should lead to new gun control laws. he plans to tell the committee law-abiding gun owners will not accept the blame of criminals. we could see fire here on capitol hill when senator dianne feinstein gets her turn to question lapierre at today's hearing. feinstein has been an outspoken critic of the nra. tuesday she told reporters they have fought virtually every kind of regulation. the time has come to change course and the time has come to make people safe. lapierre says congress shouldn't pass any new laws until the government starts enforcing the laws already on the book. it's still unclear whether former congresswoman gabrielle giffords will attend but we understand from blumenthal that a surprise guest will appear. he's not identifying who that is. >> that should be interesting. susan mcginnis in washington, thanks. >> another hi

lapierre air and former congresswoman gabrielle giffords. this is "the daily rundown." also developing this morning, news that the economy unexpectedly contracted in the last quarter of 2012. most of it is a result of weaker expo exports, decreased military spending and other factors. we'll be keeping an eye on the markets this morning to see how they react to this. there was an expectation that there would be some slowdown in the economy, but an actual contraction did catch a bunch of analysts off guard. let's get right to my first reads of the morning. speaking of the economy and jobs, they continue to be issues. the public says they care most about. but it isn't dominating capitol hill. does that change today, by the way? but guns and immigration are taking up most of the political oxygen, just about an hour from now. the next phase of the fight begins on the gun issue. former congresswoman gabrielle giffords returns to capitol hill two years after she was seriously injured in the mass shooting that killed six people in arizona. she will be joined by her husband, mark kel
